The van Zeller family, with origin in the Flemish cities of Mechelen and Nijmegen, represents 14 uninterrupted generations of wine experts devoted to production, trade and export of Portuguese wines, an unprecedented fact among other Portuguese family "dynasties” involved in the wine business.

Their connection to the wine business dates back from the beginning of the 17th century, according to the wine records Livros da Imposição (1620-1640) that refer to the trader Jorge Fernandes and his son-in-law Francisco da Silva Moura, ancestors of the Portuguese legacy of the family, as the main wine traders recorded at the time, as well as Walter Maynard, also in the family bloodline and one of the pioneers of the Port wine trade, back to 1652.
